Do such a thing exist?
Suppose a friend of mine was building a kit car, and wanted LED headlights. Can such things be purchased, or are most of the after market ones more of a grey area?

The Peterson 7” LED sealed beam replacements (701C) are DOT compliant, according to them. You can get them on RockAuto.

DOT approved LED’s do exist, but only a few of them are. The best ones I know of are JW Speaker.

Also they’re drop-in replacements for NA Miata headlights.

Only thing is, I think Rock Auto had them listed at something like $270 each...

I believe there are LED headlight kits available for the Wrangler nowadays. Pretty simple round light.

Oh yeah, I didn’t say they were cheap. They’re eyelid-turningly pricey.
If they weren’t, I’d have them on my Miata and have my headlights up all the time. LOOK!!! LOOK !!!!

Well, given there isn’t much competition in the market yet, I suppose they can ask quite a bit higher of a price.

Yeah. There are a few other vendors (Trucklite) that make a similar product for marginally less, as well as eBay, but PM also builds their stuff in the USA so that probably has a big part of it.
DOT compliance eliminates the eBay option too.

Someone here on Oppo posted an article a week or so back about LED bulbs. I wish I could find the post.
I can imagine that kit cars are scrutinized pretty closely for things like DOT compliant lights, hence my asking about DOT approved lights. If that isn’t the case, it certainly opens the possibilities.

It probably depends on where you are trying to register it; I have heard that in many US states they basically just send a cop down to look at it and all he does is check the etched VINs and bill of materials for stolen parts.
YMMV.
